Early in his career, Gustave Baumann (1881-1971) lived in Chicago and spent time in rural Indiana, New England, and New York, but he found his true home in New Mexico. He moved to Santa Fe in 1918 and spent the rest of his life there. The burgeoning but already-thriving arts community of Santa Fe welcomed the successful printmaker. The invigorating influences of other European and American artists new to the area, along with Native American potters and water-color painters, inspired Baumann to produce a wealth of woodblock prints depicting the south-western landscape, its people, and their rituals.
